WebApr 11, 2024 · Existing in the Northeast, Northwest, and Southwest of China, the ‘borders’ reduce inter-regional trade by 36.11–39.10%, 47.85–52.43%, and 40.07–47.06% from 1992 to 2024, respectively. The results are robust against employing alternative methodology, industry-level trade flows as well as alternative measurement of transportation costs.

Border effects refer to asymmetries in trade patterns between cities and regions of different countries and those that are located in the same country. Usually, trade volume between the former is much less. Economic integration (as in the EU) may be a solution to overcome these effects. A 2024 meta-analysis of 1,271 estimates of the border effect finds that borders reduce trade by one third.
