Malus sieversii f. niedzwetzkyana is a red-fleshed variant of M. sieversii. Its branches, leaves, flowers, fruit skin, and pulp are all red, with extremely high anthocyanin concentrations and considerable health benefits (Wang et al. 2010). Anthocyanins are found in the cell vacuole, mostly in flowers and fruits, but also in leaves, stems, and roots. In these parts, they are found predominantly in outer cell layers such as the epidermis and peripheral mesophyll cells. Most frequently occurring in nature are the glycosides of cyanidin, delphinidin, malvidin, pelargonidin, peonidin, and petunidin.
